The present lot, which the artist Johannes Evert Hendrik Akkeringa's entitled 'In de vakantiedagen', depicts one of the artists favorite subject matters: the beach with fisher children playing. Akkeringa found his motives in the surroundings of The Hague, where he lived most of his life. Born in the Dutch Indies on 17 January 1861 in Blinjoe on the island Banka, Akkeringa moved to The Hague in 1865 after the death of his father. At a young age his only aspiration was to become a painter. Therefore he started attending evening classes at the Hague Academy between in 1879 up to 1885, where he studied with Marius Bauer (1867-1932), Gerrit Willem Dijsselhof (1866-1924), Floris Verster (1861-1927) and Willem de Zwart (1862-1931).
Stimulated by the artistic milieu of the Academy and his artistic friends, he became inspired and decided to make landscape one of the prime subjects of his works. He focused his attention on landscape painting in the surroundings of The Hague and tried to render a realistic landscape in which atmosphere played an important role. The environs of The Hague and the fishing village of Scheveningen served as a source of inspiration. Not only was he inspired by the playing children on the beach of Scheveningen, but also the netmenders in the dunes, and the fisher folk on the beach and in the village.
Although the fishing village Scheveningen developed in the late 19th century into a sophisticated beach resort which was popular with Dutch high society, Akkeringa was mainly interested in the local population. Although the life of the population was not easy, his paintings always show a colourful and happy beach view. These cheerful scenes form a recurring theme and are amongst his most charming works. The present lot shows his mature confident style at its best and stands out due to its bright palette, capturing the atmosphere of a summers day along the Dutch coast.
