In 1872 Grimshaw was commissioned to paint three views of Roundhay Park for the notice of a Committee of the House of Commons in connection with the Leeds Corporation Improvement Bill, in which the City sought to purchase the Roundhay Park estate, to turn into a public park. (Leeds Mercury, 19 April 1872, p. 3). The Waterloo Lake was excavated from a former quarry following the Napoleonic Wars.
