JOHN DESCHAMPS

Scenery and Reminiscences of Ceylon. London: Ackermann & Co. for the author, 1845. 2° (468 x 308mm). Hand-coloured tinted lithographic frontispiece and 12 hand-coloured plates by J. West after Deschamps, printed by M. and N. Hanhart. (Plates mounted on cloth guards, margins browned and brittle, with tears and some extensive repairs, margins of first few plates also dust soiled.) Contemporary straight-grained green half morocco (rubbed and soiled, inner hinges repaired, new green endpapers). PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed to ‘Sir J. Gaspard Le Marchant with the author’s kind regards Octr. 27 1852’, also signed with Le Marchant’s monogram and dated Halifax, Nova Scotia, 1852 (both inscriptions on original endpaper, laid down to face frontispiece).

AN IMPORTANT AND AMBITIOUS SURVEY of mid-19th century Sri Lanka, where Deschamps spent nine years as an officer in the Royal Arrtillery. It combines topography with the social activities of both colonists and indigenous people, almost always in the company of their animals, the last plate showing the construction of ‘The great elephant –kraal at Cottawya’. Sir John Gaspard Le Marchant (1803-1874), the recipient of this copy, was lieutenant governor of Nova Scotia from 1852 to 1858 (see ODNB and DCB). Abbey Travel, 414.
