The Falls at Tivoli, Italy

After his move to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) in 1830, Glover continued to produce European views to satisfy a local market 'and such nostalgic works were probably more successful with the colonists than those depicting the native landscape' (J. McPhee, John Glover, Launceston, 1977, p. 40). Thirty 'views of England, Italy etc.' were sent to his bother-in-law John Lord in London in 1835. Lord exhibited them that year, and the present canvas is probably no. 60 in the catalogue 'Waterfall at Tivoli, Italy'. It is the same size as two other lost pictures from this exhibition rediscovered and sold by Christie's (no. 22 The River Derwent and Hobart Town Painted on the Spot, London, 24 May 1990, lot 90, £125,000; and no. 20 A View Between the Swan River and King George's sound, Melbourne, 4 April 1995, lot 173, A$385,000).
