It has been noted John Boyle is: "the first sculptor who has adequately presented the Indian's case in American Art." (P.J. Broder, Bronzes of the American West, New York, 1973, p. 41) Early in his career Boyle was commissioned to create a sculptural group commemorating the Ottowa Indians. Pursuant to this commission, the artist traveled West to observe the Ottowa Indians and cultivate his subject matter.
