2 works in two volumes, 4° (273 x 215mm). Uniform contemporary calf gilt, covers with double filletb border, spines in six compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in the second, compartment, the others with double fillet border in gilt, marbled endpapers, marbled edges.
FIRST EDITIONS. Travels in Arabia and Travels in Nubia are two of five works edited from the journals of the Swiss-born Burckhardt, all posthumously-published by the Association which had sent him to Africa. The text covers most of the journeys made by Burckhardt between 1810 and 1816. 'Syria was Burckhardt's first stopping-place in the Levant. He spent three years in Aleppo studying Arabic in preparation for his African travels, and while resident there he travelled through Syria and the Holy Land. Burckhardt was the first European to visit Petra, in 1812' (Blackmer). The travels described in the second work 'took place in 1813 and 1814. Burckhardt left Aleppo in 1812 and made his way to Cairo; he then carried out two journeys: one along the upper Nile and the other through the Nubian desert.' (Blackmer). (2)
