'Paddington', as inscribed here by Linnell, was formerly the name of the broad area now known as Bayswater. The gravel pit seen here is Kensington Gravel Pits, which stretched along the road now known as Notting Hill Gate. As such, this sketch, probably made en plein air, must relate to Linnell's great oil Kensington Gravel Pits of 1811-12, now at Tate Britain, London.
