Lot Essay

Following the Second World War Piper made a number of studies of monuments, including that at Boxted in Suffolk. He recalled, 'I thought they made such beautiful compositions of lights and darks' (see R. Ingrams and J. Piper, Piper's Places, London, 1983, p. 122).

The present work was reproduced as a screenprint in the artist's Stones and Bones series in 1978, no. XX (see O. Levinson, 'Quality and Experiment' The Prints of John Piper, London, 1996, no. 309, p. 114).
