Lot Essay

In this view Edinburgh is shown from the north-west, across the Firth of Forth. Beyond the busy shipping lanes of the Forth, Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace, Arthur's Seat and the Salisbury Crags are clearly visible. This view of the city had long been regarded as being of exceptional beauty and had been the subject of pictures by Alexander Nasmyth, Samuel Bough and the Reverend John Thomson of Duddingstone.
