JONES, Inigo (1573-1652). The Designs ... publish'd by William Kent with some additional designs. [London]: 1727.
2 volumes in 1, 2 (445 x 298mm). Title-pages each with engraved portrait vignette of Jones, 101 plates (35 double-page) by P. Fourdrinier and others after Jones and others, engraved head- and tailpieces and initials, mounted on guards throughout. (Lacking frontispieces, some marginal spotting to text leaves in vol. II, short tear to plate 18 vol. II not affecting image). Contemporary English morocco, tooled in gilt (corners bumped, hinges weak, spine faded with small loss to head and foot). Provenance: Robert Shafto (armorial bookplate); William Adair (armorial bookplate).
FIRST EDITION. 'Burlington purchased Jones's designs from John Talman in May 1720 and in September began to have them engraved by Henry Hulsbergh from meticulous copies made by his recently appointed draughtsman and architectural assistant, Henry Flitcroft. ... It is unlikely however that any definite composition or programme was decided upon until about 1724 when Kent was employed to edit and publish. Subscription was started ... and by 17 May 1727 two folio volumes were finished and ready to be delivered to the 380 subscribers' (Harris p. 250). Part one contains 56 plates, numbered 1 to 73, and part two 45 numbered one to 63, the double-page plate being numbered as two. Fowler 162; Harris 385; cf. Berlin Kat. OS 2268.
