Duchesse Helène von Mecklenburg-Schwerin, the daughter of Friedrich Ludwig, Hereditary Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Princess Karoline of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, Duchess of Saxony, married Prince Ferdinand d'Orléans (1810-1842), duc de Chartres and then duc d'Orléans in 1837, eldest son of the King Louis-Philippe. She is perhaps best remembered for having gone to the Chamber of Deputies in the Palais Bourbon after the Abdication of Louis Philippe in 1848, in the hope of having her eldest son proclaimed Kinga nd herself Regent. However, the threatening attitude of the populace forced her to flee and she took refuge in England where she died.
