Lot Essay

This drawing was apparently executed on a journey from Bickham, Sir William Elford's residence (seven and a half miles from Plymouth), to Manistow, the home of Sir Manesseh Lopes (a Spanish Jew, who we are told, purchased the Manistow Estate of about 2800 acres at about this time). A detailed explanation of this journey can be read in The Farington Diary by Joseph Farington R.A., volume 5, p. 290, published by Hutchison, London, 1925.
