A distant view taken from the quarries to the south west of the site, showing the stark outline of the six remaining columns from the Temple of Jupiter in the centre. The relatively high vantage point locates the temple complex within its immediate flat landscape and emphasises the height of the mountains beyond.
Girault de Prangey made more daguerreotypes at Baalbek than at any other single location and the dates, where given, suggest that his stay spanned the end of 1843 and early 1844. There are seventy-seven identified photographs in the archive including works in all formats. These concentrate on the scale and location of the site, as here, and on the remains of the three main temples as well as some examples of other smaller ruins. It can be seen from the images in the following lots that Girault de Prangey once again chose the proportions of his plates carefully to best display the form and/or detail of his selected subjects.
