Joshua Cristall exhibited a number of watercolours of woodmen. At the Old Water-Colour Society in 1807 he showed 'A woodcutter', in 1816 a 'Boy with Sticks, Windsor Forest', in 1818 'Barking Timber in Witchwood Forest, Oxfordshire', and in 1820 'Peasant Boy, Windsor Forest'.

The woodcutter in the present watercolour derives from a drawing of 1806 which is evidently a study for the present composition, and is inscribed 'Wood Cutter - near Seven Oaks' and dated 1806. This was exhibited by Spink in 1994. A very similar composition, featuring the same woodman in the same attitude, but with his wife and two children added to the background, was once with the Fine Art Society.
