Juan Gris signed Femme lisant on the reverse of the sheet- with his first name 'Victoriano Gonzalez'. In 1909 Juan Gris left the magazine L'assiette au Beurre to become a full-time painter. The present sheet was drawn at this important moment in the artist's development, and already the influence of Cézanne is noticeable in the spatial rendering of the room and the definition of the volume.
The interior in which the model is seated is the artist's studio at 13 rue Ravignan, now Place Emile Goudeau, near Montmartre in Paris, where Juan Gris lived until 1922. Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler noted in his biography of the artist that the walls of Gris's room were made of solid wooden woods, which are noticeable in the background of the present drawing.
