...In "The Butcher Block" of 1974, the vantage point of the viewer is from slightly below the wooden table. The watermelon has been cut into two almost equal halves by a sharp knife that lies at its side. The nicks and cuts on the board itself remind us that many things have been chopped or denatured on this table. The watermelon, however, retains a sense of inherent dignity and stability. As in some of the earliest Spanish still-life paintings, the melon seems almost to be a sacrificial element on an altar...
