Lot Essay

Professor Dr Helmut Börsch-Supan has confirmed the attribution to Schnorr von Carolsfeld, after studying the original, in a letter dated 17 March 2006.
This drawing was made in preparation for a woodcut in Schnorr's Bilderbibel published in 1860 (see lot 139). The inscription in the left margin is typical of the artist, and similar ones can be found on many of his preparatory drawings.
