Lot Essay
Little Monitor, cast in an edition of six, is a study for the much larger Monitor, (78 in. (198 cm.) wide) which was cast in an edition of three, also in 1961. One cast is in Battersea Park, London.
In a catalogue for the 1962 Marlborough Galleries Armitage exhibition, the artist discusses the inspiration behind the present piece, 'The project was to make a sculpture for the central façade of the Château Mouton Rothschild near Bordeaux, the subject or content having (however slight) some bearing on the famous vineyard.
It was early decided that I should make a sun, to be gilded, and of such simple shape that it could have significance at any point along the approaches (about ½ mile). An irregular oval shape that had fascinated me sporadically in the past, now it had direction, suddenly took on a new lease of life. It appeared in numerous drawings and is also repeated in the Monitors (closest to the Mouton Sun, although I didn't realise this at the time)'.
