KEROUAC, Jack (1922-1969). One autograph postcard signed ("T'Jean") and two typed postcards signed ("Jack" and "J.") to Lois Sorrells (poetess and girlfriend) in New York; written from Northport, Long Island, postmarked 22 September 1959 to 18 July 1960. Together 3 pages, oblong 12mo, one card a little creased.
"GONNA GO DHARMABUMMIN AGIN"
12 September 1959: "I'll be in town Friday ... I'll call you from Lucien's [Carr] at suppertime. I'll stay the weekend. My Mexico trip is being infringed upon fast, now Steve Allen wants I should be in Hollywood Nov 16 to read my winter fly [Visions of Cody] before 30 million people, wow, dont know whether or not ... Not drinking today, feeling fine ... Maybe I'll live ... I mean, the bottle's got me down. Hell is oneself, dreamt it last night, the words I AM THE FLAMES OIK ... urgh ... ha ha ... see ya. XXX [for kisses] J." 16 December 1959: "... Just read Tristessa and will leave it as is, just like Lucien and Cessa say [the novel was published in 1960] ... Am buying a new sleeping bag and getting ready for next spring, fixing my rucksack ... gonna go dharmabummin agin ... Rogue river, anywhere ... Mojave desert ... drive off road in desert to arroyos ten miles away and cook over little fires ... my attic floor is slick tile type good for dancing -- come any time you ready, if you want -- Jack." 18 July 1960: "When you read this I be gone on train -- I be back in the Fall healed & in good shape -- I no write nobody, no mailbox -- I think for first time in 3 years [since publication of On the Road catapulted him to celebrity] ... It has been too much, those 3 years, pulled in everybody's direction till I dont know why I'm alive -- I go sleep in T'Jean heart [his French-Canadian name]. XXX [for kisses] T'Jean." (3)
