KNORR, Georg Wolfgang (1705-1761, illustrator). Verlustiging der oogen en van den geest. Amsterdam: heirs of F. Houttuyn, 1770-1775. 6 parts in 2 volumes, 4° (261 x 205mm). Six letterpress titles. 190 hand-coloured engraved plates by J.A. Joninger, J.A. Eisenmann, A. Hoffer and others after Knorr, C. Dietsch, J. Wartenaar and others. (Occasional very light spotting, minor marginal staining to first part, light offsetting from last ten plates.) Contemporary mottled calf, gilt spines, marbled edges (extremities lightly rubbed, spines creased, headcaps worn). Provenance: G.J. Scheurleer (20th-century bookplate).
FIRST DUTCH EDITION, FINELY COLOURED SET of this beautiful work on shells. It had previously been published in German (1757-1772) and French (1760-1773). Parts I to III are by Philip Ludwig Statius Muller (1725-1776), the remaining parts by Martinus Houttuyn.
