Lot Essay

This is one of a small series of very similar paintings six more of which, purchased by the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1952, are reproduced by W.G. Archer (Indian Paintings from the Punjab Hills, London, 1973, nos.40(i) and 40(ii)). He discusses the reasons for attributing them to Bhagvan, principally on the basis of their similarity to three other series which are signed by or have contemporaneous ascriptions to this artist. He appears however not to have been aware of this particular painting when he wrote the entry.
