KYRIE. God the Father in an historiated initial K on a leaf from a Gradual, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM

[?northern Italy, 1st half 15th century]
480 x 325mm (leaf); 93 x 80mm (initial). God the Father in a green-lined mauve cloak, standing, three-quarter-figure, and gesturing, with a blank scroll, in an initial K formed of blue staves with white tracery and leafy green, pink and orange extensions, on a square burnished gold ground. The leaf with nine 4-line musical staves in red ink with square neumes and text in a round Italian liturgical gothic script, 10 (recto) and 11 (verso) additional Lombard initials in red or blue with elaborate pen-flourishing (one small natural hole in text area, some creasing and flaking to a small portion of the initial border).

Although the style of this decorative and elegant initial suggests that it is the work of a north Italian illuminator, the parchment, script and subsidiary decoration indicate the production of the book in one of the remoter areas of Italian influence.
