LA FONTAINE, Jean de (1621-95). Contes et nouvelles en vers. Edited by Barbou. 'Amsterdam' [Paris]: Fermiers gnraux, 1762.
2 volumes, 8 (177 x 115mm). Author portrait frontispiece in first volume engraved by Ficquet after Hyacinthe Rigaud, portrait frontispiece of Eisen in vol. 2 by Ficquet after Vispr, and 80 plates after Eisen, engraved by Aliamet, Baquoy, Choffard, Delafosse and others, 2 full-page vignettes, 2 headpieces and 53 tailpieces by Choffard, the last of which incorporates his own medallion portrait. Plate for Cas de Conscience in decouverte state. (Lacks half-title in vol. 2, very slight spotting, mostly marginal, tiny spot on one plate.) Contemporary French olive morocco, triple gilt fillet around sides, flat spine gilt in compartments and lettered in two, gilt edges (small stain at fore-edge of volume II).
A handsome copy of the Fermiers-Gneraux edition, considered by Ray to be 'THE COLLECTOR'S BOOK PAR EXCELLENCE' and by Rochambeau as a 'superbe dition, au point de vue iconographique et typographique'. Because of the fine plates -- Eisen's masterpiece, the edition was immensely popular, and the plates and text alike were copied in many later editions. It reprints five spurious tales, identifying the author of each. 'Parmi les libres illustrs du XVIIIe sicle, cette edition ... est le plus beau' (Cohen-de Ricci). Cohen-de Ricci 558; Ray French 26; Rochambeau 78; Sander 1044. (2)
