Lot Essay

Lowry often brought comedy to the depiction of people and animals. Two works from 1964, Bird Looking at Something (private collection), in which a bird can see something that the viewer cannot, and the drawing, Woman in a Straw Hat without a Dog (private collection), in which a woman walks along leading a dog that is outside the composition, illustrate Lowry's well developed sense of humour.
