Lot Essay

The present work is a rare example of Lowry working in the medium of watercolour. Generally he preferred to work in oil as he found watercolour dried too quickly and not flexible enough for his working methods (see M. Howard, Lowry: A Visionary Artist, Salford, 2000, p. 113). During the 1950s he did execute some works in watercolour, including the present work which depicts a scene of people enjoying some fresh air on a village green.
