'Lavoisier's preparation of a complete eight-volume edition of his memoirs was halted by his imprisonment and execution during the Reign of Terror; he left behind him only the greater part of Vol.I, all of Vol.II and a small part of Vol.IV. His widow later had these fragments privately printed in two volumes and distributed them to eminent scientists and institutions to ensure that Lavoisier would receive the credit he deserved for his chemical work ... The fifth memoir in Vol.II contains Lavoisier's claim to the discovery of oxidation; it was this claim that prompted Mme. Lavoisier to publish the Mémoires', Norman 1297. (2)
