Lawrence's appointment under Churchill enabled him to exert significant influence on the 1921 Middle East settlement, which placed Feisal on the throne of Iraq and Abdullah in Transjordan. It was to be his last official role before his escape into obscurity with the RAF, under the name of John Hume Ross.
