WALPOLE'S MANUSCRIPT WITH THE FIRST EDITION, TOGETHER WITH AN ARCHIVE OF MATERIAL ABOUT ITS PUBLICATION. Walpole's manuscript appears to date from 1939, when the article appeared in Broadsheet, the World Books Bulletin; however, three passages from the original manuscript were omitted. Dakers (the owner of the manuscript) and Bertram Rota decided to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Lawrence's death by issuing an edition of the complete text, with an introduction and footnotes by Rupert Hart-Davis, Walpole's biographer. The introduction prints for the first time Lawrence's letter in reply to Walpole's enquiry about subscriptions to Seven Pillars of Wisdom, and also relates the history of Walpole's copy of the 'Subscriber's' edition. The image on the upper wrapper is reproduced from a drawing of Lawrence, executed during the Paris Peace conference of 1919 by Augustus John, also from the collection of Lionel Dakers (lot 217 in the present sale).
