LEANDER STARR JAMESON (1853-1917) & OTHERS
Autograph letter signed ("L.S.Jameson"), to Mrs Hole (Marshall Hole's wife), one page, 4, on Bulawayo, Matabeleland headed paper, n.d. n.y. [but thought to be 1907] (tear to bottom left hand corner, with loss, not affecting text).
Having served around 6 months of a 15 month imprisonment sentence after the disastrous "Jameson raid", Jameson returned to Africa and joined the Cape Legislative Assembly in 1900. From 1904-08, he was Progressive Premier of the Cape Colony from where he visited Rhodesia.
Jameson apologises for not getting in touch during his visit "you know what it is getting away and I shall certainly be back again in less than a month and will hope to have better luck".
Together with a large quantity of other letters from Southern Africa, and the U.K. including Howard Moffat (second Prime Minister of Southern Rhodesia), George Martin Huggins (third Prime Minister of Southern Rhodesia), Lord Fortescue, Charles Coghlan, Lord Grey, and a telegram from General Smuts to Marshall Hole thanking him for his hospitality during a recent trip to Bulawayo (franked 19 September 1907), two cut signatures, and another telegram.
