Twin horses

Though the Two horses were not dated it is believed to be painted in the artist's matured years between the 50s to the 70s. Again the darker tone applied on the horses were enhanced by the wilting tree, a symbol of natural beauty rather than desolateness, according to Chinese classics interpretation and yet it is balanced by a partial depiction of a bench in the foreground - indicating that the artist is mindful of a balanced composition - as taught to him by his Dutch masters.

This work may very well seen as prototypical work, which is oil executed on a vertical board. The subjects for this genre are varied which range from Balinese beauties, vendors to different animals. With the present lot, the artist renders his compositions in fine and delicate lines that captured the essence of Chinese painting and were often completed with the inclusion of Chinese calligraphy, yet another integral part of Classical Chinese painting.
