"...de Maistre made frequent visits to Compiègne in France, to stay with friends, Lord and Lady Ashbourne, whom he met on his trip to Europe in 1923 Compihgne is an extremely picturesque medieval town whose churches, town hall, medieval ramparts, national palace and royal forest make it a major historic and tourist site The Ashbournes gave de Maistre a room in their home in Rue des Domeliers, which backed onto the medieval ramparts, for a studio..."
