Les Forts de Latour--Vintage 2003
Pauillac. Château-bottled
VINTAGE NOTE: 2003 will always be remembered as an aberrant year. It began auspiciously enough with a warm spring, conditions that lasted through flowering and the early part of the growing season. July was rainy, with particularly ferocious storms to the south in St.-Julien. August turned hot, with a heat wave that broke records throughout Europe. Extraordinary heat was coupled with a complete drought, causing the vines to shut down. These conditions prevailed until the third week of the month, when rain began to fall, refreshing the vines are re-starting the vegetative cycle. The sun came back out on 15th of September, continuing through the 27th.
"2003 Les Forts de Latour possesses a dense ruby/plum/purple color in addition to notions of cold steel, lead pencil shavings, and cr?me de cassis. Full-bodied, opulent, heady, rich, and lush, it can be drunk now or cellared for 15+ years." 92 points, Robert Parker, April 2006
"Super-ripe and slightly jammy, the 2003 Forts de Latour could easily be mistaken for a wine from California, with a rich plum and fig fruit character, a hint of smoke, and plenty of cask influence still apparent. On the palate the wine was rich and substantial, but still very well balanced for a wine of such endowment. This is drinking well now, and should last." Charles Curtis M. W., November 2010
