Born in Kunming, Yunnan in 1942, Li Fuyuan entered the Beijing Art Academy in 1957 to study painting under Wu Guanzhong. While a student of Wu, he was exposed to nineteenth-century Impressionist paintings, and was at the same time influenced by traditional Chinese folk art. After graduating from the Academy in 1963, Li continued to teach in Beijing for several decades. The art of Li is inspired by animal families in their natural habitat, depicting tigers, leopards, goats and owls bursting out from dramatic landscapes, full of bold, contrasting colours and elements that compose a visual melody of a fantastically cacophonous world.
