Lot Essay

Smythe and his family moved to the Château d'Honvault, on a hill between Wimereux and Boulogne, in 1882, when their previous house, a Napoleonic fortress on the nearby coast, was engulfed by the sea. A larger version of the present subject, described as showing 'the old castle battlements lit up by the afternoon sun,' was exhibited at the Royal Watercolour Society in 1902.
