LISZT AND THE 'DAME AUX CAMELIAS'. Liszt is bewildered to hear of a dispute ensuing on the death of Marie Duplessis, in which his name, and that of Koreff, are involved: 'Assurément, la très gracieuse personne dont la succession (problematique?) est l'occasion de ce contest, n'aurait pas imaginé qu'elle vous attirerait un jour des désagréments de cette nature, alors qu'elle vous invitait avec une si coquette insistance, en votre qualité d'ancien ami, à ces charman[t]s soupers, dont elle vous chargeait en quelque façon de me faire les honneurs ...', insisting that if a stenographer had been present to record her affectionate words regarding Koreff, no dispute would have arisen, and ending with a reminder that Koreff's acquaintance with Duplessis, originating in his medical care of her during her 'première fluxion de la poitrine' in early 1845, pre-dated that of Liszt, who met her only in November of that year.

Marie Duplessis (1824-1847), one of the most celebrated courtesans of her age, was the basis of the character of Alexandre Dumas's La Dame aux Camélias, which in turn Verdi was to use as the basis for La Traviata. She was Dumas's mistress for a year up to August 1845, and it is always supposed that she subsequently became the young Liszt's lover, although by January 1846 she was married to Comte Edouard de Perrégaux. The failure of the marriage precipitated her into a life of excess, and within a year she was dead.
