Stephen Herbert describes Henry Hopwood's (1866-1919) Living Pictures as 'the most important Victorian book on cinematography'. Hopwood worked in the library of the Patent Office and started work on the book in 1898. It was published the following year. The book is a carefully researched history of the development of the cinema. A second edition by R. B Foster appeared in 1915 with Hopwood contributing a preface.
