Jozef Beck (1894 - 1944) was Poland's foreign minister from 1932 to 1939. He attempted to maintain a non-threatening attitude toward both the Soviet Union and Germany while strengthening alliances with France and Romania. After the German invasion of Czechoslovakia in March 1939, Beck gained the disputed Teschen area for his country. On 6 April he signed an alliance with Great Britain, hence drawing Britain into World War II after the invasion of Poland by Germany in September of the same year. Beck and the rest of the Polish government were forced to withdraw from Poland and he spent the remainder of his days in Romania.
