Lot Essay

Ralph Oddy, first recorded in 1841 and in his King Street premises from 1875.

Similar examples of this type of child's chair are to be found in St Fagans, Cardiff and in Bradford City Museums and Art Gallery. This label is recorded in B Cotton The English Regional Chair, Woodbridge 1990, p.204, figure NE399, upon a Windsor chair. The author suggests that some Yorkshire cabinet makers were habitually labelling furniture that passed through their hands and indeed had even deliberately imported chairs from other regions.
