Lot Essay

In 1651, Saftleven travelled up the lower and middle Rhine regions of Germany, starting in Arnhem and Cleve, in the eastern Netherlands, and travelling as far as Bingen. He produced many drawings and etchings which inspired his 'Rhenish' landscapes.

A drawing which depicts Linz am Rhein from a different angle is in the Nationalbibliothek, Vienna (see W. Schulz, Herman Saftleven, Berlin, 1982, p. 316, no. 705, fig. 150).
