Lot Essay

Only thirty-eight paintings, depicting interiors, street scenes and a church interior by Vrel are known. It is generally thought that he worked in Delft and Amsterdam under the influence of Vermeer and de Hooch. Three paintings by Vrel are listed in the 1659 inventories of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, indicating that his works were highly valued by David Teniers II, the Archduke's agent and curator.

The present picture shows similarities with the Woman at a Window, dated 1654, in the Kunsthistoriches Museum, Vienna.
