Lot Essay

This lot is sold with a certificate by Dr. Hermann Voss, dated 6 December 1962.

Tosini studied with Lorenzo di Credi and Ridolfi Ghirlandaio with whom he frequently collaborated and whose name he eventually adopted. After 1556 he worked with Giorgio Vasari on the fresco decoration of the Salone dei Cinquecento in the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence. Tosini executed several important commissions towards the end of his career including the fresco decoration of the city gates of Florence.

The poses of the figures are loosely related to those in the smaller panel sold by the Earl of Haddington at Sotheby's, 8 July 1987, lot 1 (B. Berenson, Italian Pictures of the Renaissance: Florentine School, London, 1963, II, pl. 1301).
