Inlaid overall with mahogany lines, each with slightly rectangular caned back and seats, with down-scrolled arm-supports and on square tapering legs, one with chalk inscription WESTON, one front rail replaced, both stamped MB (2)

Lot Essay

This rectilinear chair pattern, introduced during the 1770s, was popularised by A. Hepplewhite & Co.'s Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guides of 1788-94. According to Messrs. Gillows of London and Lancaster, cushions were fitted to both the back and the seat of such cane-upholstered chairs.
