Lot Essay

The design of these giltwood mirrors is inspired by one attributed to Thomas Johnson, which was illustrated in Genteel Household Furniture in the Present Taste, 2nd ed., London, 1762, plate 95 (lower right). Inevitably the design is much simplified, but the S-shape with curling acanthus leaves, the C-scroll at the top, and the pilaster and outer vertical are clearly evident in Johnson's design.
