A GEORGE II BURR-WALNUT CONCERTINA-ACTION CARD-TABLE

The eared feather-banded rectangular top enclosing a green baize-lined playing-surface with later wells, above a plain frieze and cabriole legs headed by foliage issuing from volutes and terminating in claw-and-ball feet, one angle bracket later, restorations, the top probably re-veneered, with old label inscribed Miss Pease

Lot Essay

This compass-cornered card-table is designed in the George II Palladian manner with serpentined legs enriched with Roman-acanthus foliage and terminating in Jupiter's eagle-claws. Amongst related walnut-veneered tables is one illustrated in R.W. Symonds, English Furniture from Charles II to George II, London, 1929, fig. 25.
A pair of card-tables with related legs were sold by H.R.H. the Duchess of Kent, in these Rooms, 12 March 1947, lot 226.
