Lot Essay
The general form of the reed-edged and pedestal-ended library table, with its plinth-supported, hollow-panelled pilasters and its lion-paw feet emerging from palm-wrapped volutes, relates to an 1823 pattern for a mahogany leather-topped library table in Messrs. Gillows of London and Lancaster Estimate Sketch Books (Westminster City Library; Gillow archives ES no.3252), which was supplied to Sir H. D. Hamilton Bart., in 1823 for a price of 15-17/4.5 gineas. A related writing-table with very similar panelled trestle-ends and attributed to Gillows, was sold by the Lord Brownlow at Christie's house sale, Belton House, Lincolnshire, 30 April - 2 May 1984, lot 88. Another writing-table designed in the 'antique' manner with twin plinth supports and more elaborate decoration was sold from the collection of the late Mrs. Helen Langford-Brooke, Christie's house sale, Mere Hall, Cheshire, 23 May 1994, lot 105.
