The deep burgundy field with a pale indigo and deep yellow-green leaf-formed meander trellis with floral vinery overall within a deep yellow-green inner border, a pale indigo middle border and a deep burgundy outer border all containing joined rosette cartouches, heavy wear, partial ends, small repairs, one 3in. x 2in. repaired hole
Approximately 7ft.5in. x 5ft.10in. (226cm. x 178cm.)

Warp: wool, white, Z2S, slightly undulating
Weft: 2 shoots, one undulating, the second slightly more undulating, cotton, ivory, Z3S
Pile: wool, Z1, Z2S, symmetrical inclining slightly to the left, H1.8 x V2.4/cm.
Sides: additional green wool shoot, Z2S bound together with two additional warp threads flatwoven, foundation shoot wound around the first warp thread

Lot Essay

This carpet was obviously included in the Bernheimer collection because of its design similarities to the following lot. It is interesting to note that while the design of this lot and lot 26 is considered extremely unusual today, this rug shows that it must have been known in the late nineteenth century.
