SOUTH CAUCASUS, CIRCA 1880

The indigo field with an afshan design comprising a central column of rosettes, flowerheads and floral sprays flanked by palmettes and flowerheads issuing split palmettes, in an ivory border of meandering angular palmette and leafy vine between zigzag stripes, outer stripe missing at each end, selvages rebound with slight loss, slight wear and differential corrosion
Approximately 9ft.1in. x 3ft.6in. (276cm. x 107cm.)

Warp: white cotton, Z4-5S, undulating
Weft: 2 shoots white cotton, Z2S, undulating
Pile: wool, Z2S, ivory and pink sometimes 2 x Z2S, symmetrical inclining to the right, H3.0 x V3.0/cm.

Lot Essay

Both the field design and the border design of the present runner can both be found in eighteenth century Caucasian carpets. The tonality however and in particular the softness of the wool, presaging the nineteenth century Kazaks, indicate a date of circa 1800.
