AN INDIAN CARPET
LATE 19TH CENTURY
Of sixteenth century Isfahan design, the chocolate-brown field with a counterposed design of scrolling palmette vine around large palmettes, flowerheads and cloudband, in a light tan border of meandering vine issuing palmettes alternating with paired serrated leaves between mid brown linked flowerhead stripes, a kilim strip at each end, some areas of wear particularly of corroded dark brown, small areas of repiling, small splits
Approximately 9ft. x 4ft.7in. (274cm. x 140cm.)
Warp: ivory cotton, Z2S, strongly depressed, hardly undulating
Weft: 2 shoots ivory cotton, Z2S, one hardly undulating, the other strongly undulating
Pile: wool, Z2-3S, symmetrical inclining to the right, H3.9 x V3.4/cm. Sides: no additional warps, the main weft returns around the last main warp; around this is wound light brown wool Z2-3S
Lower end: approx. 4cm. flatweave with light brown wool wefts, Z2-3, then 2 rows with white cotton Z2S, then knots of groups of four warps
Upper end: approx. 3cm. flatweave with light brown wool wefts Z2-3, 1 row of white cotton Z2S, then similarly knotted as below
