A KHOTAN CARPET
EAST TURKESTAN, MID 19TH CENTURY

The shaded sang-de-boeuf field with an overall lattice of tendrils issuing rosettes and floral sprays, in a light shaded green border of meandering vine between inner polychrome swastika panel and outer cloud and mountain and minor light blue floral meander stripes, plain outer red stripe, even wear, selvages replaced with slight loss, black repiled
Approximately 13ft.3in. x 6ft.4in. (403cm. x 193cm.)

Warp: white cotton Z7S, at edges not depressed and slightly undulating, generally strongly depressed and considerably undulating
Weft: 3 shoots wool, white or white and brown threads Z1, first and third considerably undulating, second more so
Pile: very fine wool Z2S, asymmetrical open to the left, H3.5 x V2.3/cm.
Lower end: approx 1cm. flatweave with wool, white and brown threads, Z1, uncut fringes twisted together Z
