AN USHAK MEDALLION CARPET BORDER FRAGMENT
WEST ANATOLIA, CIRCA 1700

Forming a runner, the indigo field with a column of green and light blue rosettes each flanked by four similar smaller rosettes, divided by red palmettes each with four similar smaller motifs on the diagonal, one red and one blue border each with flowerheads issuing serrated leaves between zigzag stripes, made up from more than one piece, some wear, more severe in places, rebound edges, small areas of repiling
Approximately 13ft.1in. x 2ft.1in. (299cm. x 64cm.)

Warp: white wool, Z2S, depressed, undulating
Weft: two shoots, red wool, Z3, the first slightly undulating, the second strongly undulating
Pile: wool, Z2, knots symmetrical inclined to the left, H2.5 x V3.7/cm.
